HILLEROD, COPENHAGEN
We arrived Copenhagen around 130am in the morning due to 2-3 hours flight delay from Finland. After we touched down, we collected our car and drove to our Air BnB apartment for the the night. We woke up about 9-10am for our breakfast in the apartment before heading out to Hillerød, a distance of 35km north of Copenhagen. This town possesses one of the great treasures of Denmark and is well worth a detour regardless of where you spent the night. We first visited an art gallery within the tourist information in Hillerød before walking to the Frederiksborg Castle, which has been called "the Danish Versailles." Surrounded by a moat, it is one the most beautiful royal residences in Denmark and the setting for the Museum of National History, with one of Denmark's greatest collections of historical paintings. Allow at least 1 1/2 hours for a visit here. From Hillerød, we continue along Route 6 southwest into Roskilde, where we visited the UNESCO World Heritage site, Roskilde Domkirke. It is a unique and beautiful medieval cathedral. The Viking kings Harold Bluetooth (d. 985) and his son, Sweyn Forkbeard (d. 1014) conqueror of England is buried here. Almost 40 kings and queens of Denmark are buried here. The Cathedral closed at 6pm, and after that we made our way back to Copenhagen city centre. |

COPENHAGEN
After breakfast, we drove about 15-20 mins from our apartment to the famous Little Mermaid statue. Tons of people here to take photo of the mermaid. We strolled around area near the statue for about 45 mins before driving to Nyhavn again, hopping to get a perfect reflection shot. Unfortunately, we wind was too strong and hence there wasn't any reflection. Nevertheless, we still had pretty good shot due to the great weather. After that, we headed to the new Little Mermaid statue and did some shopping before driving across to South Sweden. |

HELSINGOR
We made our way back to Denmark from South Sweden this morning, and after crossing the bridge connecting the two countries, we drove towards Helsingor. Along the way, we stopped at one of the three hunting landscapes in North Zealand, a cultural site recognized by UNESCO. These sites preserve the hunting landscape that was important to the people in the region during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was also an important showcase of the power of the monarchy. Inside the forest, we are still able to spot some wild deers roaming around. We spend about an hour walking in the the forest. From here, we followed the coastal road 152, known as Strandvej. Depending on traffic, the scenic drive takes some 45 minutes to Helsingør, a distance of 14km (8 2/3 miles), following the same Strandvej route. Once in Helsingør, the one magnet for most visitors is Kronborg Slot, fabled as "Hamlet's Castle," even though Shakespeare presumably never visited it and Hamlet may never have existed. Allow at least an hour for an afternoon visit here after lunch in Helsingør. |
